• Segments 1 and 3 flashing red ? this means overheating. The Xbox ‘freezes’ and no button except the power button functions. Let the console cool and check the vents for free flow of air.
• Segment 1, 3 and 4 flashing red ? general hardware failure is indicated. This requires opening up the console and changing the GPU X-shaped clamps. In most cases the processor clamps too have to be changed.
• All four segments flashing red ? means that the AV cable is not being detected. Reconnect or change the AV cable.
• Segment 4 flashing red ? indicates hardware failure. You need additional information.
Besides the Xbox red lights flashing and signaling danger there are also error codes that are displayed on the screen. Each code signifies specific hardware failure information. The following information may be helpful in understanding the meaning of these codes.
• Hard Drive Errors: E79, E69. E68 and E67. Indicate problem with the hard drive: either with the connection to the hard drive or the hard drive itself. Take out the hard drive and try playing without it.
• AV Cable Error: E74. Indicates problem with the AV cable. Change the AV cable and if the cable is known to be in good condition the problem lies with the scaler chip. Very rarely the problem may be with the GPU.
• General Hardware Errors: E73 ? Indicates problem with the Ethernet port.
• Dashboard Update Error: E71. Shows during or immediately after the booting animation. You need to reset the console but if that does not work you have no other option than sending the console to the company for repair.
• Voltage Error: E68. Indicates voltage error. Either the fans are pulling up too much power or there are unnecessary accessories attached to the console.
• DVD Drive Errors: E64, E65 and E66. These indicate DVD timeout, incompatible firmware and DVD without f/w chip. Make sure that the DVD version matches the version that the dashboard can read. Also ensure that the DVD tray is properly closed.
