Xbox 360 Faults
The Xbox 360 is not only a gaming console, it was a global phenomenon; more so, as it was one of the biggest companies in the world, Microsoft, which was launching it.
Xbox 360 faults, primarily in the design of the console, however, spoiled the show soon after the launch.
With a launch of this magnitude it was expected that there would be some snags. Microsoft is not alone in this. Even early PlayStation consoles, PlayStation 2 and Sega’s Saturn suffered huge returns due to disc read errors, hard disk failures, and crash faults.
So many Xbox 360 errors have been reported that Microsoft had to dedicate a fund of $1 billion for repairs and also to extend all warranties for a period of three years. Although, the company says that design has been improved but the problems are still likely to occur.

That leads us to the question, what if you were to buy an Xbox 360 today. Will Xbox 360 faults that the console is notorious for occur? The answer is, probably yes. But there is also a strong possibility that these may be general faults associated with any electronic gadget that can be set right without much difficulty.
Here is a list of some of the common Xbox 360 faults that surfaced during the early launch period. Some of these may have been rectified in new batches but you never know: forewarned is well prepared.
- One of the first Xbox 360 faults that appeared in the media pertained to disc scratching. The problem was found to be linked to Xbox 360 optical lens not being restrained properly. There were also suggestions that this problem arose from users who moved the console during operation or kept it on unstable surfaces.
- Later, the media reports were flooded with complaints of losing video output without any flashing red lights on the console.
- Xbox errors are indicated by the ring piece around the power button. E74, the error indicated by lower right hand quadrant of the ring, is a common fault that most gamers experience. It is either caused by a broken A/V cable or the Xbox scaler chip being damaged.
- The most feared among the various Xbox 360 faults is indicated by three red lights flashing. It is a ‘general hardware failure,’ also known as the Red Ring of Death and does not point to any specific issue. The system ‘freezes’ or refuses to respond to any button apart from the power button.
A vast majority of reported Xbox 360 faults result from overheating. It was suggested that there is a fault in design in regard to placement and securing heat sinks. Overheating can also be due to improper and prolonged use or clogging of the vents. The new version of Xbox 360 known as Jasper was specifically designed to lessen the occurrence of the infamous Red Ring of Death and to address other issues as well. However, the new version has still not been properly evaluated.
