360 ring of death is a ‘general hardware failure’ and the error is indicated by three flashing lights on the face of the console. These red lights are a part of a circle of light around the power button and are normally green during normal operation. Each of the four quadrants of the circle represents a specific problem. Three lights flashing, all but one at the top right hand of the circle, results in ‘freezing’ ? the console does not react to any control or button and you have no option but to switch it off.

Switching off and letting the console cool for a couple of hours, is the simplest but a temporary solution. Probably the three-light error will recur and more often than you would believe.

Warning signs of 360 ring of death include:

- Freeze ups where the screen displays strange (checkerboard or pinstripe patterns) graphical problems while you are playing a game.
- Static-like sound.
- The power button is the only one that is working.

Occasional freeze ups do not necessarily mean that the error will follow when you restart the Xbox. But if the 360 ring of death appears on restarting the console will not function.

Sometimes the 360 ring of death may have all four lights flashing. This occurs mostly when the AV cable is not detected by the system either because the cable is not connected firmly or due to a problem with scaler chip attached to the AV connection inside the console.

Reverting to where we started from, the symptoms of PC hang ups may be similar, the cause is entirely different. The 360 ring of death is mostly due to overheating as the high-end CPU and GPU work on high frequency and capable of generating too much heat.
